A small retreat with a close relationship between the rooms, the roof garden and the surrounding landscape.
The brief
The owners wanted a compact place to retreat to, with outdoor planting close to the rooms and a straightforward energy plan. The roof became an important part of the design rather than an afterthought.
Planting, shade, roof access and panel placement needed to be considered together. The layout kept the living spaces simple and opened them toward the garden.
The approach
The design brought planting and energy planning into the same roof study. Access, drainage, weight and maintenance all informed the detail and the way the home meets its garden.
